There are many reasons why ductless heating and cooling systems are growing in popularity, such as better air quality, increased efficiency, and personalized temperature control. But one very important question remains—can a ductless heating system really keep you warm in winter?
Let’s take a closer look at just how powerful these systems are.
How Do Ductless Heating Systems Work?
Ductless heating and cooling systems include two major components: an indoor unit installed directly into the room is going to condition, and an outdoor unit is where the compressor is housed.
In the cold season, the ductless heat pump extracts heat from the surrounding air and sends it straight into the room through the refrigerant lines. For those extra frigid days, some units allow for electric heat strips to be installed as an extra precaution to ensure that you are always getting the right amount of heat regardless of the temperature outside. That said, many ductless heat pump systems are capable of providing full heat output even when the outdoor temperature is minus 5 degrees Fahrenheit or lower!
Are Ductless Heating Systems Effective in Winter?
If you are still curious whether or not ductless heating systems will give you the warmth you need with the cold settles in, the answer is an astounding yes! Technology continues to evolve and, over the years, the heat pumps used in these units have significantly improved. They can now keep a house warm throughout the winter very easily.
Ductless heating systems are as efficient as they are effective. Because they deliver the heat directly into each room, you are utilizing the most streamlined way to reach your preferred temperature. This is much different than ducted units that are prone to air leaks and increased utility bills.
With a ductless system, you can turn any space into one that is warm and cozy this winter. In other words, you can heat your entire home or only those rooms that may not be connected to your central HVAC system.
Tips for Your Ductless Heating System During Winter
Below are a few tips that will ensure you get the most out of your unit.
Choose the Right Ductless Heating System
There are many different ductless heating systems available. Making sure you choose the right one is so important. Check the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) rating to determine the unit’s efficiency. Higher is always better – we recommend at least 9.0 HSPF, though units at 10 HSPF and higher are available. You will want a unit that can work efficiently and effectively for your particular climate.
Sizing the output of the unit is also of critical importance. Ductless heat pumps come in sizes from 6,000 BTUs and up, though the 12,000 BTU unit seems to be a very popular size. As the output goes up, expect the size of the indoor and outdoor unit to also increase. In larger outputs, e.g., 24,000 BTUs and larger, the indoor unit can be 43”- 46” wide or more – so make sure there is room!
Of course, talking it over with the professionals is always a great idea.
Proper Placement of the Unit
To warm your home, you need to properly place the unit. It should be at least 5.5” below the ceiling and be unobstructed by furniture or various other objects. This keeps the space comfortable as the heat circulates throughout the room.
Outdoors, have the unit placed where it will be shielded from outdoor weather as much as possible.
Engage in Preventative Maintenance
Ductless heating systems require very little upkeep. However, you do need to wash the filter every couple of weeks and consider replacing it if it becomes damaged. This is necessary for keeping the coil clean and for trapping dirt, dust, and allergens.
Investing in routine maintenance with your local heating professionals is always a smart move, too. Keep your unit operating at its best so that you won’t be left in the cold this winter!
